Chinese podcast: The 996 Work Culture

Actually, this is the first podcast I watched from Mandarin Corner!

I usually watch the videos at 1.5x and pause it to write down new vocabulary in my notebook.

Are Chinese Workaholics? | The 996 Work Culture

I then type them down here as a form of revision to reinforce what I have learnt.

996 - 9am to 9pm work days, 6 days a week.

励志 - inspiring
数一数二 - one of the best

混吃等死 - eat, bum around and do nothing but wait for death
兼职 - part time job
代码 - code/coding
程序员 - programmer
上进 - someone who strives to improve

Thoughts: 996 sounds horribly stressful and inhumane. The podcast mentions the possible cause of it - when someone starts to work overtime or extra in a bid to gain favour/promotion, causing their colleagues to look lazy even though they were doing what they were supposed to do.

In Singlish, we call this 'spoil market'. The fact that this escalated to the point where people can die from it is just horribly tragic and deeply regrettable.
